String theory research papers

Gauge-string duality, or the AdS/CFT correspondence, is a conjectured duality between strongly coupled quantum systems and classical gravity in higher-dimensional spacetimes. This is a wide-ranging and actively studied area of theoretical physics, and the group's work covers a number of different aspects and applications. Our research covers such areas as: applications to strongly coupled supersymmetric gauge theories in diverse dimensions; scattering amplitudes in Yang-Mills theory; aspects of AdS/CFT in supergravity and geometry; applications to strongly coupled plasmas, relating transport properties (viscosity, thermal conductivity, diffusion constants) to excitation spectra of black holes.

In Dr. Thomas Grimm's Max Planck Research Group scientists study various fundamental aspects of string theory, including its connections to lower-dimensional effective physics. We investigate physical dualities linking different string theories and develop the tools to exploit their mathematical structures. This includes gauge-gravity dualities, mirror symmetry and heterotic/F-theory duality. Our particular focus is on supersymmetric compactifications which preserve the minimal amount of supersymmetry in the effective theories. One application of these constructions lies in the study of particle physics models beyond the Standard Model, in particular Grand Unified Theories, within string theory. A second focus is to construct compactifications for string cosmology and the study of the string landscape.

Physics is a wonderfully absorbing activity. Do you have a favorite science outside of physics?
Well, the thing that excites me about physics is that it really seeks to answer some of the deepest questions about the physical universe. And besides physics, the other area of science which I think is on par with it but in a different arena is the science of the mind. One can call it psychology or cognitive science or things of that sort but what is it that allows the brain to produce mind? What is consciousness? Does it have a physical basis that we can describe by understanding the circuitry of the brain? Will we one day be able to reverse-engineer the brain and be able to build computers that can mimic the brain and in that way perhaps have robots that actually claim to have these sensations and emotions of living, sentient beings? I think those are some of the deepest questions about life, and outside of physics, I'd say those for me are the most absorbing questions.
